I’m job searching. I’ve been job searching so long that nearly every job description is starting to sound EXACTLY the same. Still, some things stand out, especially in the marketing field.
…”create viral videos,”…
Listen, I know those companies are trying to sound with it. I know they’re trying to sound hip. They are missing the point.
You cannot create a viral video. The definition of viral is something that spreads WITHOUT ANY ASSISTANCE WHATSOEVER. If you have to market the video, if you have to send it out to thousands of people, IT’S NOT VIRAL.
Make funny videos. Make entertaining videos. Make videos that are so different we can’t help but tell our friends about it, but stop saying you’re going to make viral videos.
If you’re a marketer and you have to send me a video via Facebook, Twitter or email, you suck at making good videos.
Now, go do better.

Yes! Absolutely yes!
I know what folks mean when they say that they want to make a viral video, but it’s definitely kind of annoying when that phrase is use. It definitely seems like a sign that they don’t truly understand how things work, which doesn’t really bode well for their marketing plans.

Tyler- You are right on the money. I’ve worked with a lot of marketing folks who try to do this… and it always fails. True viral video is organic and usually, unforeseen. I work at RightThisMinute now…. see it everyday! PS- When I search ‘viral viral video’ on Google… you are ranked about fourth… that’s some nice Google juice!
