Stop worrying about your competition

by tdhurst · 7 comments

It’s human nature to look around us in a race. We want to know who’s behind us, how far they’re behind and how much harder we have to work to win.

This is ALWAYS a mistake. In a race to the finish, your only goal is to run as hard as you possibly can.

Looking around slows you down. It takes your focus off WINNING.

Sure, competitive analysis is great, but never during the race. Do your homework beforehand, not while you’re on a sales call, working on a project or just getting the job done.

Stop worrying about what your competition is doing. Your best is all you can ever hope to be.

Focus on that.

I have to disagree – you should absolutely be aware of what your competition is doing at all times – read and react. You shouldn't change tactics to be like them (unless they're doing it better than you) but you need to be aware. You can be sure the good ones are aware of what you are doing to try to overtake them.

I even wrote something about this: http://www.chrisconrey.com/2009/04/06/do-you-kn…

Too much time spent on surveying others means you're not doing what
you're good at. In terms of measurement, you shouldn't be worried.
Steal their ideas, but don't keep active tabs on them.
