So…what do you do?

Goddamn it’s an annoying question. Not as bad as what’s your major, but damn close.

It’s said that too many of us reply with our job titles, as if what we do for a living defines what we are. It’s stupid, it’s shortsighted and it’s a waste.

I want to know what your favorite thing to do is. I want to know what makes people happy. I want to know what it is you’d do if you weren’t too busy working.

We’re wasting our lives pretending that what we get paid for is what we really want to be doing, aren’t we?

I hate this question. I totally agree that the answers always gravitate back to work. If I wanted to know what you did for work, I would ask, “How do you pay the bills?”

I hate answering this question because I don’t ever “do” just one thing. My interests are wide and varied. I don’t want to give you a nutshell answer.

So my issue is more with the question than the cookie cutter answers.

There’s no perfect question, because it all depends on context. But what’s a good “getting to know you” question?

My answer has become: I help people and businesses communicate. Then I start a conversation about the similarities between what I do and what the person does.

Helps me weed out the people I know are going to hate me. Being yourself is always a great filter.

Arkayne served me up this again. I think based on the past year that I should change my answer to “I eat”.

That's actually how I describe you to people.

“He's not fat or anything, the guy just likes really good food. Ask him where to eat anywhere in AZ. He'll know.”

    Totally serious.
