The great flattener of our time

by tdhurst · View Comments

We all know the world is flat. Thomas Friedman said so.

We can get nearly anything delivered to our door or find where it is online. That was Web 1.0.

Now we can reach and interact with nearly anyone we’d like to. Status, geography and language mean less than ever before. Naturally, you’d assume that there wouldn’t be another ruling class with more power than the rest of us? Not everyone seems to think so.

Companies still aren’t talking to their customers. Big publications like the NYT (I HATE this article) are chronicling PR attempts to garner press. And what do they do? GO STRAIGHT AFTER THE BIG NAMES. Time and time again. Where’s the flattening?

Except that old approach doesn’t work. At all. Community-driven, somewhat-democratic super blogs now have the control. Accessible by most and free to all, it’s time we all realize this is the greatest change we will ever experience. Goodbye Industrial Revolution, hello Information Revolution.

Our lives will never, ever be the same. I’m ready for it. Are you?

Well said, friend.
It’s a crazy/cool time in which we live. I marvel at the world my children will know and take for granted.
Let’s rock it.

Nice blog Tyler. I do own that book, The World is Flat. Do you recommend it? Regarding the Information Revolution. Yes, I’m totally ready. I’ve seriously decided to be it’s bitch. Just kidding but seriously… I’m not even sure we even know HOW to be ready for this revolution. It changes so quickly. The new regulations set into place by President Obama and the FTC should be interesting to watch evolve. New jobs should be created in that space as well. I even read an article today that the older generation is stepping up for this revolution just like they did the Industrial Revolution… accept this time they’re making friends on Facebook instead of working in the factories and building the RailRoad Industry.

Should be a good show. That’s for sure!
