Show your mistakes

We all want to look good.

We want to bring our best work, display our best talents and show our best side.

And that’s great. It’s good that we want those around us to see us at our best. People can learn and be inspired. But we’re selling everyone short.

People can learn from our mistakes too. Not just the huge, life-changing screw ups, but the everyday, little things that we usually dismiss.

Embarrass yourself in front of a crowd? Share why that happened. Lose a client because you said something you shouldn’t have? Let us know.

Trust the people you know to learn from what you did. Understand that only showing your good side, while however entertaining, is only part of what you do.

Show your mistakes so we can all stop making the same ones.

Or so we can laugh at you.

    Thanks for the challenge, brother.
I come from a very walled-off background where appearances were everything, so I need the reminder.

Agreed. Another thing this brings to mind which might make an interesting posting from you Tyler along these lines… you don’t have to be perfect.

I think there’s a whole generation that just doesn’t do or try anything unless they know they are the best. Why play an instrument if you can’t get famous? It used to be that everyone played or could sing in any social gathering. But this applies to lots of areas of life. Does that same transparency / keeping up appearances thing apply here?
I say share your struggles so ppl can see where you’re at so they can challenge and help you to get better. I’m always excited to help people when they TRY on the web and I love to come in and see what they are going for and help them get to the next level.

I like it! I have to wonder though, are there certain mistakes that shouldn’t be shared. I guess it all comes back to your level of transparency in the online world. I personally would have no problem admitting if I make a mistake but something tells me that it would take a lot of soul searching for me to admit to something huge.

Tiger Woods didn’t exactly come out and admit to his mistakes right away and we all saw what happen there. Then again, who am I kiddin’ though, were not Tiger Woods.

They are always things we shouldn’t share, but the more we do, the more we can help. My point is not to be scared of admitting when we mess up.
