Location isn’t important–another Twitter story

Too much is made of what city we’re in, who else is there and what our locale is known for.

Location means jack now. We can talk to anyone, anywhere at almost any time. Stop waiting for that big move to NYC or Boston or Chicago before you start kicking ass. Kick ass now.

Much props to Ward Andrews. You won’t see him whoring himself out, but if you look hard enough, you will find him kicking ass, every single damn day. Who got one of the most popular athletes on Twitter? Who shares quite a bit of responsibility for the start of Amy Jo Martin‘s success? This guy.

Think Shaq joining didn’t make a difference for Twitter? You bet it did. I bet its traffic increased a whole helluva lot too. Props to Josh Strebel for the chart.

    I'm skeptical of the conclusions drawn from the graph. While the evidence clearly shows an increase in the usage of Twitter in a post-Shaq-joining world, there's no indication that that single incident was the catalyst. More likely — and more in line with Occam's Razor — is that Shaq was one of the many people that joined during Twitter during that climb.

    Thousands of people join Twitter and dozens of other social networks every day. While I won't deny the possibility that one or some *can* create a huge spike in interest for large group of people, I'd need to see more evidence before I laud kudos on any.

    Skeptic to the bone. :)

    Yes, it would have been much more helpful if there was some sort of way to track traffic either to or from @the_real_shaq's account at the time, which would show us how much of an impact he had, if any, on Twitter's popularity at that time.

    While I think there are many factors it's hard to deny that someone that has over a million followers didn't have ANY impact in the growth of the system.

    Unfortunately, I'd say that Ashton Kutcher and CNN did more for Twitter than Shaq did, although i think Shaq actually uses Twitter in a much more positive way. I'd be willing to bet that the graph above would look the same for any number of celebrities who happened upon Twitter roughly the same time.

    Ashton and CNN didn't do shit for Twitter. They didn't add to the conversation, they didn't get ppl connected and they didn't engage.
