ASU State Press not understanding that it wasn’t the snub, but rather the way it was handled, that was the real issue.
Virgil Renzulli, who is apparently so bad at his job that we never heard a peep from him this entire time. Maybe you should get a job outside academia for a year or two, buddy.
Sharon Keeler, who is so bad at her job that she started this entire thing even after she was warned it would probably blow up. While I definitely disagree with what she said, I suppose falling on the sword is noble in some way. Still think she should have done it differently.
The fault in the Obama debacle lies directly with Sharon Keeler, Virgin Renzulli and the rest of the PR department. Not awarding Obama an honorary degree is fine, although debatable, but the decision to tell the press he wasn’t worthy was absolutely ridiculous. That’s not what PR departments should be doing and if any of those in power had ever worked outside of academia, they’d know that.
We all know that ASU is looking to be a national player and it certainly has the numbers, but it still lacks the mindset. Crow has the right vision, but he’s dragging along people that aren’t willing or are incapable of making correct decisions. Why KeelerRenzulli still has herhis job is beyond me. Why Renzulli hasn’t been heard from is deplorable. Crow should have never had to pick up the phone and KeelerRenzulli never should have been stupid enough to give theallow Keeler to give quote that she did.
Until ASU makes sweeping changes to bring in a team worthy of the university that Crow has been promising, none of it can happen. Even the best captain needs a great crew, and the existing one just isn’t up to the task.
Can Crow be trusted to make the necessary changes to improve the university? How much could he do with Keeler’s $97k and Renzulli’s $240k per year?
Perhaps it’s time to bring in someone who knows what they’re doing.

I still don’t totally agree with you. How is the PR flacks (who did not handle this appropriately, that much I do agree) supposed to handle this? No statement “explaining” the position at all?
I think Crow dropped the ball by not deciding how to honor Obama immediately and failing to get that info to PR for publishing right after it was known that Obama was coming to ASU for commencement.
