Honesty, like good shoes, will get you far

As a proud Vibram shoes owner, I’m constantly asked about my shoes.

Questions like:
Are they comfy – yes, but you have to break in your feet
Do you actually run in them – yes, ran four miles today and a half-marathon in June
Where can I get them – three shops in the Phoenix area or online

are thrown at me on nearly a daily basis.

And I never tire of answering. I love these shoes. They’ve changed the way I run, the way I walk and the way I think of minimalism. So yes, I’m a big fan. So big that I recently ordered my third pair, as I needed an everyday shoe.

But I messed up. I went against their sizing recommendations and ordered a size smaller than my previous running pair, thinking that walking in them wouldn’t make them shrink blah blah blah, whatever. After nearly two solid weeks, they were pinching my feet. So I sent this letter, along with my shoes, sans box or receipt:

I screwed up. I really did.

I’ve been a proud Vibrams owner since September 2009. These shoes, and the lifestyle that accompanies the idea behind wearing them, have changed my life. They are my full-time running and walking shoes.

When I ordered my third pair, I erroneously concluded that they would run a little smaller than my other pairs. Because of the strap on the KSOs and Sprints I own, my feet were held in securely, so I figured the Classics wouldn’t fit as well.

I was wrong, the shoes are too small. I haven’t washed them, but I’ve definitely worn them. In fact, I’ve worn them nearly every day in the nearly two weeks I’ve owned them.

I’d like to return them for a size 44 black Classics. I understand that you don’t typically accept returns on worn shoes, but I can’t wear them either. I realize this is asking a lot, but I would be grateful if you could overlook my mistake and help me out. I guarantee this gesture will give your a thumbs up from me, but also gushing adoration to everyone who ask about my shoes.

If this cannot be done, please contact me for my credit card number so I can purchase a new pair.

One week later, I got this:

Hi Tyler,
We have received your return. Your exchange item will be shipped within the next 2 days. Please expect to receive your replacement within the next 5-10 business days.
Thank you again for your interest in FiveFingers!
Regards,
Ben

How cool is that? No hassle, no making me buy another pair and no reminding me that they did me a favor. Companies like this DESERVE my patronage.

Now that's a story worthy of the tag “Inspiration.” Thanks Tyler.

Good to hear – love hearing about companies that are taking care of their customers. Still need to try a pair on and give it a whirl

I'm surprised you don't have a pair already.

Tell them mine fell apart. Get me a size 14 please.

Yeah, I can't see you in these shoes.

What? I thought these were the new hip things to wear. My big toe nail would probably cut through anyways…thats why I wear steel toe boots!
