Are you exceptional?

Most people don’t know what exceptional is. Anything not terrible is good, and anything slightly better is exceptional. That’s crap and you know it.

Take Turf, here in Phoenix. It’s a subarbanized Irish-themed (no, not Irish) bar just north of the downtown ASU campus. Their beer selection is decent, their prices fair and their food okay. It’s nothing special.

But don’t dare mention that. Cheerleaders of such mediocrity will say: “but it’s downtown! We need more downtown bars!” and “Well Seamus (same owners, located a mile south) is better, so go there, too.” But Seamus is located poorly, doesn’t have WiFi and isn’t open that late, all strong attributes of Turf.

So their both mediocre. Neither of them completely satisfies. Neither of them are exceptional.

Think about the last job you did, the last team project you worked on or the last paper you wrote. Was it exceptional? Did it have a few good qualities, but none so great that they stood out? Was it just good enough to get by?

Yes? WHY ARE YOU WASTING OUR TIME? Why aren’t you exceptional? Why aren’t you asking those around you to be?

Exceptional breeds more exceptional. We feed off those around us. We learn from each other’s successes and mistakes.

Now, why AREN’T you exceptional?

 Are you exceptional?

I’ve consistently raised my standards over the last few years. I want things to be exceptional. But lately I wonder if I’m starting to become too jaded. I don’t want to lower my standards, but I don’t want to be so critical I become anhedonic either.

That’s the real trick, isn’t it? It’s not productive or fair to constantly push others for more, but that’s the only way we’ll all get better. That breeds conflict, which affects us in every way, including negatively, which no one wants.
