Every community needs a home
Online, home is a website, not a social network. It’s a self-hosted blog, not a calendar program. It’s a place that can be accessed by anyone, without the need to sign up for an account (although registering their name is usually helpful).
I tell my clients this every day. Sure, they could use a Facebook page. Yep a Twitter account is useful, too. But those aren’t homes, those are extensions. They are add-ons. Facebook could go down tomorrow, Twitter could succumb to a DDoS attack and Yahoo could get swept up my Microsoft.
But your own web page never* goes away. It may not be the nicest, it may not be the most efficient and it certainly may not be the easiest, but it’s always there.
That’s why Phoenix Friday Night(s) has a new home. It’s not run by one person anymore, but by many. If you’d like to contribute, please ask. Links to Facebook, Upcoming and Eventification will all have homes there.
*I realize that web pages are not permanent, but they also aren’t subject to TOS that social networks are, so they’re more reliable.
