Dear brands: get off my social networks

by tdhurst · View Comments

I understand the need for advertising. I understand that businesses want me to buy things. What I don’t understand is why they think I’m stupid.

Brands, your Facebook Fan Pages are stupid. It’s veiled advertising and I hate that. I like Diet Coke, but I don’t need to be a fan to do that. I don’t want to play your stupid games. I don’t want to share your applications with my friends.

I want to talk to your people. Yes, you’re employees. I want to connect with them. I want to share things with them and I want them to share with me. I want to be a part of the human experience.

Your fan page gives me nothing, you big brands. NOTHING. It’s a billboard unless you actually talk to me. I can tell when your status updates are lawyer approved. I don’t give a shit about any of that.

Hell, hire your goddamn secretary and let her talk for you. She’d do a better job.

Have you looked at what Dunkin' Donuts does with its fan page? I'm just curious whether you think this applies equally to all fan pages, or some more than others.

Great post, Tyler.

The Big Brand on social networks…the robotic feeds, the auto-direct messages…once again, another way for one-way communication just like the good 'ole TV ads. All ANTI-social and shows they have a way to go…

On the bright side, cool to know there's job security for community folks, right? :)

It's certainly not equal. Dunkin' Donuts, by interacting, don't act
like a big, faceless brand.

Yep, it just pains me to see so many big brands doing it wrong.

Quite honestly, I couldn’t care less about what a secretary at Cocacola or McDonalds could tell us.. how shitty is her everyday’s job? She’s not incarnating the brand, she just works for a company which – hopefully – pays for her salary… *DONT_KNOW*
